With the number of vehicles increasing at the rate of one crore per year, Indian motorists are struggling hard to drive safely, especially, during the monsoon, which only adds to their motoring woes. Needless to say, there is a strong need to mitigate the risks related to motoring by getting the right motor insurance that covers vehicular damage on account of natural calamities such as heavy rainfall and floods, thus averting huge financial losses. Hence, it's better not to leave anything to chance.
Vehicle owners should observe a few simple precautions while driving during bad weather. They should drive slowly through water-logged areas and put the vehicle into the first gear before entering a flooded area. Avoid going full throttle while driving through a flooded area as it may force water to enter the cylinders, causing serious damage to the engine. If the vehicle has broken down and is already submerged in flood water, then one must shift the gear to neutral and apply hand brake before getting out of the vehicle. Also, do not try to start the engine using the starter or push-start technique. This can damage the engine because water present inside the cylinders will cause a hydrostatic lock resulting in breakage or bending of connecting rods.
Allow the water level to recede and get the vehicle pushed out of water in neutral gear. Let the water drain out for some time. Don't try to start the engine. Call your authorised workshop technician or tow the vehicle to the nearest garage. The repair cost of vehicles damaged due to floods is usually 30-80% of the total vehicle cost. Most of the urban vehicle owners don't have adequate motor insurance to cover such losses. In some cases, vehicle owners are not even aware of the policy terms and conditions as well as exclusions and hence, face a lot of trouble during claims settlement. For hassle-free claims settlement, always keep the policy document in a safe, easily accessible location. Note down the policy number to be accessed during the times of need. Note the renewal dates and set reminders. Keep the 24x7 call centre number of the insurance company handy for immediate support. Contact your insurance company's 24X7 helpline number to know about the details of documents required for claim processing and also details of the preferred garage, where the cashless repair facility can be availed.
Some of the common documents that are required for claims settlement include, claim form duly signed, valid RC copy of the vehicle, valid driving licence copy, policy copy, FIR if required (for theft, third party damage; major highway accidents) and original repair bill, proof of release and cash receipt. Insurance companies today also offer add-on covers that take into account depreciation, consumable coverage and return to invoice coverage, among others.
